To celebrate the 80th birthday of renowned and versatile Pretoria artist Isa Steynberg, the Association of Arts Pretoria will be exhibiting several works of art in different media.
“When I was about two and a half years of age, I discovered that I could draw with a little stick in clean, damp sand. I found my medium through which I could express all that I observed. Since then I have not ceased to draw or model everything I could lay my hands on – from the soap in the bathroom to my food. The little pieces of scrap gypsum in the studio of my father (the sculptor Coert Steynberg) were my first drawing chalk on the cement floor.”

Isa studied art at school and thereafter. In 1960 she was at the Royal College of Art in London where she also spent all her free time in museums and galleries. She also studied graphic art in Paris.
“I devoured art books to master different techniques and my training as sculptor was in the studio of my father. My inspiration still comes from art, nature, music, poetry, philosophy, psychology and the wonderworld introduced by science. My biggest concern is about the damage caused by the greed of human beings.”
The retrospective exhibition will be opened by Johan Myburg on Saturday 7 May 2022 at 11:00 and runs until 28 May 2022.

Ter viering van die vermaarde Pretoria-kunstenaar Isa Steynberg se tagtigste verjaarsdag, word etlike kunswerke in verskillende media wat sy deur haar lewe gemaak het, by die Pretoriase Kunsvereniging uitgestal.
“Toe ek ongeveer twee en ’n half jaar oud was, het ek ontdek dat ek met ’n stokkie in skoon klam sand kan teken. Ek het my medium gevind om aan alles wat ek waargeneem het, uitdrukking te kan gee. Van toe af het ek nooit opgehou om te teken en te modelleer met alles waarop ek my hande kon lê nie, van die seep in die badkamer tot my kos. Die stukkies afval gips in my pa (die beeldhouer Coert Steynberg) se ateljee was my eerste tekenkryt op die sementvloer.”

Op skool het Isa kuns geneem en later kuns studeer. In 1960 was sy by die Royal College of Art in Londen waar sy ure en dae in die museums en galerye deurgebring het. Later het sy ook grafiese kuns in Parys bestudeer.
“Kunsboeke het ek verslind en verskillende tegnieke en mediums leer bemeester. My opleiding in beeldhou was as assistent en leerjonge in my pa se ateljee. My inspirasie put ek steeds uit kuns, die natuur, musiek, poësie, filosofie, sielkunde en die wonderwêreld wat deur die wetenskap blootgestel word. My grootste besorgdheid is oor die skade wat die mens, in sy hebsug, aan ons planeet doen”.
Die retrospektiewe uitstalling word op Saterdag 7 Mei 2022 om 11:00 deur Johan Myburg geopen en duur tot Saterdag 28 Mei 2022.
